Prelude No. 4 “BASS” in C minor, Op. 46 for Two Pianos

When I was a student, I sang in a choir. With my low voice, I naturally ended up in the bass section. In the pieces we sang, the main melodies usually went to the sopranos or tenors, while the basses stayed in the background, going “boom, bom-bom” like an accompaniment. It could feel a little lonely down there.

I wrote this piece because I wanted to give the bass its turn in the spotlight. Going deeper than the baritone range, I included plenty of passages that let the lowest notes resonate. As the music unfolds, the other piano joins in, adding a symphonic fullness and weight while the bass continues to provide the foundation.

My apologies to the Piano I player for not giving them quite as much to do. The next time I write for two pianos, I hope to give both players plenty of time in the spotlight.
